What Pinoys are Searching For

Nothing much changed from November.

Pinoys are still so much into anime, gaming, actresses, and music. The Christmas spirit showed up though and the new telenovela (or is that Koreanovela?) Princess Hours drew in interest.

ITECH 2007

Organized by: Ateneo de Manila
January 28, 2007, AIM Conference Center, Makati City

I spent some time with students from Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle University and Mapua Institute of Technology at the AIM Conference Center today and was the last speaker for their IT conference.

When the Bloggers Went Offline to Parteeh! (Blog Parteeh 2007)

Yesterday I had the privilege of joining the gathering of Filipino bloggers in the Blog Parteeh 2007. It was really exciting for me to meet and spend time with the writers of the blogs I've been following the past few months. Popular bloggers, SEOs, technopreneurs, the father and mother of the Philippines internet, media people... it was definitely a must-attend party.

I got distracted when the preacher in blue jeans, well-known inspirational writer, Bo Sanchez arrived. I'm a fan of Brother Bo. I was plain starstruck! You can just imagine how thrilled (galak na galak!) I was when he interviewed me for his video blog.

Congratulations to the organizers for the fantabulously-organized party! I went home with a warm, fuzzy feeling!

Lava in my Study!

I finally fixed up the Google lava lamp Derek sent me a dozen weeks ago. The wax became so hard during shipment and it took a while for it to melt and become bouncing blobs. I was thinking of getting some fish for my study room, but this is so much better. I think I'll still get some fish though, at least I can talk to them.

Lyceum Philippines

CCS Week
January 17, 2007
Lyceum of the Philippines University, Intramuros, Manila

I had the privilege of speaking to computer science students yesterday. I was invited by Dean John Ruero as one of their speakers for the celebration of their CCS Week. I had fun speaking about Google and how students can utilize its services. It was with great pride that I shared the recognition given by Fortune Magazine to Google as America's best employer. I do hope that by sharing the opportunity to students they would use this as an inspiration to study and dream big.

Google Named Best Company to Work For

Fortune Magazine named Google the best company to work for. And I totally agree! I’ve been working for Google the past few months and I could say it’s been great. I visited Googleplex a few months ago for training and I felt I was Alice in Wonderland. There was food, food and food everywhere! No shortage of M&Ms, salmon and every nut, cereal, type of milk, juice or softdrinks!

I felt right at home. My colleagues and friends would always kid me that I’m a nerd, that my fascination for data, research and what-have-you is out of this world. I was awestruck the first day in campus. I forgot all about the building I was going to and was at a panic, but I managed to remember that I should’ve gotten off at Building 1945. Good thing Nathan, the hotel driver, was kind enough to chauffeur me back to B1945.

I think I was in shock the whole time I was there. I ended up being quiet (now that’s a mean feat) and just observed. The culture was definitely diverse. Most of the people were almost a foot taller than me (and I thought I was tall). Everybody was intelligently brilliant, funny, warm, caring and concerned. Everything was efficient and yes the toilet seats were warm.

And it was a happy surprise to find lots of Pinoys who work for Google. And I’m happy that those who visited Manila the past few weeks have gotten in touch with me to say hi.

So you wanna work for Google? Apply today.

Blogging and Social Computing Forum

Digitalfilipino.com
January 5, 2007

I attended the Blogging and Social Computing Forum sponsored by Digitalfilipino.com last Friday. Sacha Chua gave a very passionate talk on social computing. It would be interesting and useful to see a local version of www.upcoming.org - a site in Canada that aggregates local events as posted by its members. Noemi Lardizabal Dado shared her experience on personal blogging and how one can use it for advocacy. I surely enjoyed J. Angelo Racoma's talk on professional blogging venture and the four types of professional bloggers - corporate problogger, independent problogger, celebrity problogger and blog overlords.

I'm sure happy I could blog again! (Hope internet connection gets better in the coming weeks).
